Durham is a cathedral metropolis within the unitary authority of County Durham in North East England. The metropolis lies on the River Wear, to the south-west of Sunderland. Founded over the ultimate resting place of St Cuthbert, its Norman cathedral turned a centre of pilgrimage in medieval England. The Durham Cathedral and adjoining Eleventh-century Durham Castle had been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986.
